“That’s my Family”: Social & Parasocial Relationships in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451

In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury shows us the chilling consequences of technology interrupting human connection through social and parasocial relationships in the text. Guy laments that ‘the walls were always talking to Mildred’6, making moments of real connection difficult in the white noise of the parlour. Perhaps even impossible.

This image seems horrific, until you realise that we’ve all done it – then it becomes alarming.

‘The Ridiculous Invalid: Jane Austen’s Sanditon and Andrew Davies’ adaptation

Jane Austen’s Sanditon is an unfinished, twelve chapter gem of a book. In it, Austen satirises the 19th Century trend for seabathing, portraying a range of invalid sufferers (some with hypochondriac-esque complaints).

Edge Hill PhD researcher, Emma Butler, thoughtfully pierces the idea of the invalid in Jane Austen’s Sandition, evaluating both the parody and horror in the portrayal of sickness.

Fatal Attraction: The Housemaid, Self-Preservation or Self- Destruction?

How many red flags does one person need to ignore before willingly walking into an attic that only locks from the outside. Was Millie’s living situation ever dire enough to allow herself to become a prisoner – again?

“Art has no influence upon action”: The Question of Influence in The Picture of Dorian Gray

There’s something inevitable about The Picture of Dorian Gray. Every component enamours a reader: a beautiful boy willingly corrupted, a wise gentleman obsessed with aesthetics over substance, an idealistic artist that ultimately pays the price for his creation.
